This spring’s Omniquest selection is Equal Is Unfair: America's Misguided Fight Against Income Inequality, by Don Watkins and Yaron Brook. This book has hopefully provoked some interesting conversations in our classrooms, and more will continue. The study of rising income inequality is a hot topic in the media and beyond right now.
This book asserts the real threat to the American Dream isn’t rising income inequality, but instead a war on success. Watkins and Brook write that everything we’ve been taught about inequality is wrong, by exploring how the minimum wage hurts those it claims to help and why middle-class stagnation is a myth, among other themes.
Here at Northwood, we know the American Dream is achievable, and year after year we graduate students who go on to model how a foundation of ethics and integrity lead to success. We build each other up and revel in the progress of a global, free-enterprise society in which our freedom and responsibility have an opportunity to shine.
These are the themes I hope you will find in Equal is Unfair. To further our discussion on the book, Northwood is pleased to invite co-author Don Watkins to campus on March 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM when Don will host a great discussion of the book and his views as part of Values Emphasis Week. The program is open to the public and we invite everyone to join us at Griswold Lecture Hall for his presentation, or to follow along with all the Value’s Emphasis Week events on social media by using #NUVEW.
Have a great weekend!
