This week was a busy one, packed with events celebrating diversity. From our Martin Luther King Celebration Luncheon Monday to Soup and Substance, an opportunity to hear from speaker Greg Pollack on “Breaking Down Barriers in the Workplace”, and the wheelchair basketball tournament benefitting Special Olympics in Midland County, this week was about celebrating the differences among us which make us so valuable to one another. Noted civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated himself to promoting communities through service. Here at Northwood, we serve our community in a similar way, by making a difference. This past Go MAD Day provided 2,844 total hours of services which helped strengthen our community. The MLK luncheon keynote speaker, alumnus Bryce Rucker, was an active and integral part of our very successful Mock Trial Team and a member of the Timberwolves Football Team. Upon graduation, Bryce worked in the nonprofit sector before attending the University of Notre Dame Law School where he earned his Juris Doctor then transitioned into private practice in 2014 as an attorney. Bryce highlighted the uniqueness of our Northwood community, and how we embrace our differences and use them to our advantage.
Diversity is an important part of our personal lives, and it’s important in business, too. Northwood students have a unique opportunity to learn about - and from - one another. The students, faculty and staff at Northwood all bring a distinctive view to the table, and we are fortunate to be able to share an appreciation of one another. This is embedded within The Northwood Idea, as author Dr. V. Orval Watts wrote, “Essential to the Northwood Idea, then, is appreciation of the unlimited opportunities for character development in voluntary business enterprise.”
I look forward to the many more events planned this semester which embrace the diversity of our Northwood family.
Have a great weekend!
