38-Year Tradition Continues with 2016 Freedom Seminar

Freedom, free enterprise and American democracy are so foundational to the Northwood Idea that for 38 consecutive years, the University has hosted a springtime Freedom Seminar. This multi-day day symposium held on our Midland campus, which begins Thursday, April 14 and runs through Sunday, April 17, is led by distinguished academic and business leaders who investigate current business and economic topics. Fourteen speakers, including prominent guests including many from our own Northwood community, will explore provocative topics ranging from inequality to government effectiveness to happiness.

Among the presenters are Senior Economist Paul Traub of the Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, who will share his views on “Michigan, the U.S. Economy, and the Road Ahead.” Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, president, Minaret of Freedom, will discuss "Freedom and Islam.” Jason Vines, an independent communications consultant, will open the week with a presentation titled "Freedom, Responsibility, and Stupidity.”

Our own Alex Tokarev, assistant professor of Economics, will explore racism during his talk titled, "Racist Policies in America: Do Black Lives Matter to Our Government?" Northwood’s Dr. Tim Nash, Senior Vice President and Director of the Robert C. and Janice S. McNair Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, will share his insights on democracy in a talk titled "Can the American Dream Survive?"

The open sharing of ideas during the Freedom Seminar encourages free thinking and the exploration of new concepts that students can apply to the challenges of today. Our heartfelt thanks to our speakers, whose insights provide greater depth as we explore the Northwood Idea and our operating philosophies.Visit for a complete schedule of featured speakers, along with times and topics. I hope to see you all at the Freedom Seminar.

Have a great weekend.
