It is always a special pleasure to highlight the activities of students and faculty as they help address important human service needs in our community. Garden City Junior Laura Rhodes was recently named Student United Way member for the United Way of Midland County Board of Directors. Laura’s motto is the familiar Mahatma Gandhi quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” She is passionate about community service and finds joy in helping others. It is especially heartening, considering her Entrepreneurship major, to know that she believes businesses have a responsibility to be socially aware and actively involved in meeting community needs.
Our Northwood values remind us that we are all accountable for the care and welfare of others. In Midland, United Way is a key recipient of some of that care. Each year, students like Laura participate in many events, including “Rake a Difference,” a day spent helping senior citizens clean their yards; and Welcome Weekend community service projects. Our own Bill Bateman, associate professor at the Devos Graduate School of Business, is a United Way board member and was the 2015 board president.
Special thanks to Rebecca Rekeweg, United Way Community and Campus Volunteer Manager, who serves as our student liaison, filling the critical role of matching interested volunteers with vital community needs.
Last school year, Northwood logged almost 14,000 volunteer hours with the Agency. There’s no better way to lead than through this kind of community service. Thank you students, faculty and staff for being a living embodiment of the Northwood Idea.
Have a great weekend!
