Celebrating Our Roots in Global Entrepreneurship

Our free-enterprise society is one with deep roots in entrepreneurialism. From these roots, our democracy – cultivated by innovative, action-oriented citizens – grows and blossoms. Northwood University was proud to join free thinkers around the world in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week – a celebration of those who launch businesses that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. The week was marked at Northwood by student programs, public events, competitions, workshops and intimate network gatherings.

One of our signature events was the 7th Annual Business Pitch Competition. Fifteen Northwood students presented business startup plans, product ideas or innovative class projects to Northwood alumni who served as judges. In the past six years, of the 80 businesses that made pitches, more than 37% moved on to become operational in Michigan. This outstanding statistic demonstrates the tremendous impact of instilling an entrepreneurial mindset in our Northwood students. The winner of the competition was Paige Marie Photography, started by a senior who has run her business while a student and will fully launch it after graduation in December.

Another highlight of the week was a workshop led by incuba8LABS, a Midland-based business incubator founded by three Northwood alumni. The interactive workshop led students and community members through the creative process of generating, developing and communicating new ideas. Attendees also received coaching on how to design a concept around customer needs in the marketplace.

Global Entrepreneurship Week was an inspiration to students, faculty and guests. It was wonderful to see learners and community members alike deepen their understanding of and passion for entrepreneurialism. Our goal is to continue to cultivate these deep, strong roots by exercising our individual freedoms and promoting the diverse and unique nature of enterprise.

Have a good weekend.
