When Collaboration Really Shines

An international university like Northwood relies on strong relationships with many strategic partners. Sometimes we take those collaborations for granted as we attend to the work at hand, yet today one example shines so brightly it’s worth sharing the details. The National Association for Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) and EFG Companies together selected Sophomore Javante Dilworth as the recipient of their Northwood University private donor scholarship. The award will fund Javante’s remaining three years as a student, a grant that could reach up to $100,000. NAMAD and EFG said they chose Javante, who is enrolled in the Automotive Management Program, based on scholastic merit, leadership and fortitude.

What makes this announcement even more notable is that Javante lost his mother during his freshman year. A product of a single parent household, his mother’s untimely death thrust him into a very adult situation in which he quickly learned how to provide for himself. Throughout the year, he sought out various projects, volunteer opportunities and jobs on campus, consistently demonstrating maturity and strong leadership for his age. Despite these trying circumstances, Javante maintained a 3.0 grade point average.

It’s unlikely that NAMAD and EFG Companies could have imagined an impact so great when they created their Northwood University Scholarship. Yet their belief in the value of diversity and their desire to bring out the full potential in every student led to something truly spectacular. There could be no better example of the power of collaboration.

We offer our congratulations to Javante for earning the scholarship and overcoming tremendous odds to attain his college degree. We also offer heartfelt thanks to NAMAD and EFG Companies for their ongoing support of our students, their strategic partnership with Northwood and their embodiment of our values as a university. It’s wonderful to see their commitment shine in such an exceptional way.

Have a great weekend!
