Experiential Learning Opportunities at Northwood University

I just finished an interview with a major radio station in the Detroit metro area during which I talked about our students’ engagement and experiential learning opportunities. Interviews like these are not difficult for me to do as our students are so engaged in activities such as the Stafford Dinner on our Michigan campus and the Auto Show of the Palm Beaches on our Florida campus, both taking place this weekend. The Stafford Dinner is a student-run event which is hosted by the Hospitality Management department and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.  The event is named in honor of Mr. William D. Stafford who was the first chairman of the Hotel, Restaurant & Resort Management Department at Northwood Institute which later became Northwood University. Proceeds from the Stafford Dinner support scholarships and offer a venue for students to showcase the skills and professionalism they have acquired during their time at Northwood. Dr. William A. Parlberg, President and Chief Operating Officer of Zehnders of Frankenmuth, Northwood alumnus and member of our Board of Trustees, will be the keynote speaker.

The Auto Show of the Palm Beaches is another example of experiential learning as over 200 of our students work to help vehicle manufacturers and dealers unveil the latest makes and models. The various displays will be located throughout Northwood’s tropical, 100-acre West Palm Beach campus along with a variety of international food trucks and family activities.

And several of our students attended the 55th Annual International Franchise Association (IFA) Convention this week, where our Board of Trustees member Melanie Bergeron was named Chairman of IFA.

During most weeks of the year, we are fortunate to have engaged students who are making the most of their experiential learning opportunities at Northwood University, which they will take with them into their careers as they become future business leaders.

Have a great weekend.
