This weekend we celebrate Winter Commencement and the 280 graduates who will end one phase of their lives and begin another. This time can be bittersweet for the graduates, and for those of us who have helped educate them over the past few years. Accepting the diploma is the culmination of a journey of hard work, passion, commitment and sacrifice. Our students are leaving behind all night study sessions, juggling too many responsibilities and rushing from one thing to the next. Their apartments are bare. New jobs await. They are ready to begin their careers. It’s difficult to describe the pride we feel here at Northwood at times like these. All our energies have been directed toward commencement, and to preparing our students for their new reality. Part of that preparation involves setting a philosophical foundation. Northwood views the world differently than other academic institutions. We stand firm in our belief in fundamental philosophies that must hold true in education and in all of life. These center around the advantages of an entrepreneurial, free-enterprise society … the value of individual freedom and individual responsibility ... the honor in functioning from a foundation of ethics and integrity … and the opportunities found in promoting and leveraging the global, diverse and multi-cultural nature of enterprise.
Our students uphold these values each day, and tomorrow – as they begin their new lives – their energy, creativity and dedication will shift from a focus on academics to a focus on living a prosperous, successful and wholesome life. Our values go with them, to share with those they encounter in their families, their communities, and their careers.
This educational ending is a wonderful beginning. To all our Northwood graduates, we offer our heartfelt congratulations. We know you will continue to make us proud.
Enjoy your weekend.
