Celebrating Liberty

We are especially excited about the upcoming week of October 27-31 when we’ll welcome two dozen of the world’s leading economists, entrepreneurs and political philosophers to our Midland campus for our inaugural Freedom Week. An impressive list of speakers will offer their insights on current issues, historical information, and the Northwood Idea using an engaging, 15-minute Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) talk format. A variety of communications mediums will be used ranging from taped presentations to live web discussions to in person conversations. Among our guests will be founders, presidents, CEOs, and directors of some of the world’s leading think tanks, academic institutions and corporations. Presentation topics are highly diverse, as you might imagine from a program featuring so many of the world’s best economic minds, and range from labor issues to bureaucratic regulation.

The sessions will occur Monday, October 27 through Thursday, October 30, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Griswold Lecture Hall. Friday we will finish the week with Milton Friedman day, in honor of the Nobel Prize winning economist and writer.  Alex Tokarev, an assistant professor of Economics at Northwood University whose philosophies were profoundly influenced by Friedman, will be the featured speaker at Milton Friedman Day, during which we will explore the questions, “Who protects the consumer?” and “Who protects the worker?”.

This is a free event with several sessions each night, so there is something for all interests. Students, friends, alumni, community leaders and the general public are welcome. All the sessions, with the exception of the Milton Friedman day, will be videotaped and available online. Our Freedom Week web site contains a full list of session topics and speakers for your information, as you pick and choose how to spend your time. We hope you’re able to join us for these very special sessions as we celebrate our liberty.

Have a great weekend!
