Michigan Is On The Way Back

There was encouraging news last week from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Northwood University. The Foundation released its 2014 Economic Competitiveness Study, the third edition of a nationwide analysis of state competitiveness. Research showed Michigan has improved in national competitiveness from a ranking of 47th in 2011 to 30th in 2013. Just as promising, the state was the top performer in the Great Lakes region based on a gross state product growth of 2.56% and in terms of new business start-ups, ranking 20th this year, up from 48th in 2012. Michigan is on the way back! As you review the study in greater detail, I am sure you will see the natural connection between the study and Northwood University’s free enterprise business orientation.

This is the Foundation's third annual report and once again Northwood University played an integral role by conducting the research. The exhaustive study uses data from 2000-2013 and looks at more than 200 variables ranging from tax and regulatory environments to the price of electricity and population net migration. The project is an excellent example of how Northwood University can broaden our reach and impact by exercising practical, applied research.

The Study will be repeated next year and I’m confident Michigan’s strong entrepreneurial spirit will continue to show itself as the state rebounds even further. For more details regarding the study, go to the Chamber Foundation web site.

It is with a heavy heart I share the news that we lost a great faculty member over the past weekend. Gary Mazza, associate professor and chair of Mathematics at our Florida campus and Faculty Athletic Representative, passed away after an aggressive battle with cancer. Gary had been a member of the Northwood Family since 2002. He was known for always putting his students first. He loved them and he loved Northwood. The Florida campus celebrated Gary’s life with a memorial service on Wednesday, October 1. On behalf of our faculty and staff, we offer our deepest sympathies to Gary’s family.

My best regards,

Keith
