Essential to The Northwood Idea, then, is appreciation of the unlimited opportunities for character development in voluntary business enterprise. - V. Orval Watts, The Northwood Idea
Volunteering for Success
This week (March 10-14) is spring break at Northwood University and, while our students and faculty system wide enjoy a much deserved hiatus, two of our students are using their time off to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Junior Brianna Reising and sophomore Adrea Baughman spent this week in Middle Tennessee working on a variety of service projects including those benefitting underprivileged children, which is a part of United Way’s Alternative Spring Break program in Middle Tennessee.
Alternative Spring Break, or ASB, “promotes community service, develops leadership skills, and creates strong bonds among its participants.” Thanks to the vision and generosity of Layle “Kip” Smith, CEO of Noranda Aluminum Holdings Corporation in Franklin, TN (and a Midland, MI native), Northwood University’s Volunteer Manager for United Way of Midland County, Rebecca Jehl-Rekeweg, partnered with United Way of Williamson County in Tennessee to make arrangements for Reising and Baughman to attend ASB 2014 at Barefoot Republic Camp in Franklin, TN.
The mission of ASB and CEOs like Kip Smith reflects and supports both our core values and our value proposition here at Northwood University. In fact, when Mr. Smith discovered the students he was asked to sponsor were from Northwood University, he responded immediately.
As we work to fulfill our mission at Northwood University for generations to come, we are reminded to draw from success stories such as this. Like ASB, the United Way, and CEOs like Kip Smith, Northwood University’s commitment to the intersection of campus and community is a commitment to helping others achieve more by teaching them how to connect with others to do the same.
Have a great weekend.
