Happy New Year, Northwood family! We have returned from what was hopefully a restful break, and are back ready to make the spring 2019 semester a great one.
This week, we announced our plans to field an esport team for this fall. Esports, or competitive video gaming, is a worldwide phenomenon among high school and college students. Demand for a professional organization in the last few years yielded the governing body NACE, the National Association of Collegiate Esports. Northwood is just the fourth school in Michigan to offer students a chance to “game” at this level.
Many of our data-driven and computer-focused programs are already well aligned with gaming, and we see big opportunity with the creation of this team. Some studies have shown gaming improves teamwork, strategizing and quick decision-making. These are qualities that make for great players, and also qualities employers look for when they hire Northwood students.
Like other varsity sports, our esport team will also have a place to practice and compete. Starting this spring we will be renovating the classrooms in lower Jordan Hall to make room for a state-of-the-art facility for our team to use when they arrive this fall.
We are excited to see what this new opportunity brings and hope you will join us this fall to cheer on our competitive gamers!
Enjoy your weekend,
