Northwood Tutoring Director Presents at MTA Conference

Lorie Ermak, Director of Tutoring at Northwood University Michigan recently presented a session at the Michigan Tutorial Association 32nd annual Connections Conference titled “100 Bright Ideas:  Hints & Helps for Directors.”  Providing a helpful roundtable discussion for experienced and new directors, the session focused on best practices in a tutoring center, as well as brainstorming to solve problems that were presented by attendees.

One hundred twenty two people from 26 colleges and universities around the state attended the Michigan Tutorial Association’s (MTA) 32nd annual Connections Conference on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Delta College Planetarium in downtown Bay City, Michigan. The conference was open to tutors, both students and professionals, as well as supplemental instruction leaders and directors of tutoring centers for the purpose of encouraging an exchange of tutorial information. Conference Chairs Lorie Ermak of Northwood University and Elizabeth Dewey of Delta College reported that attendance increased over previous conferences and were pleased that both new and returning members were present.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Stephen L. Chew, of Samford University in Birmingham Alabama, who spoke on “Developing a Successful Mindset for Learning.”  Dr. Chew has been a professor and Chair of Psychology since 1993 and is best known for his series of YouTube videos on how to study effectively in college.  He has received numerous awards, including the 2011 U.S. Professor of the Year, by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The MTA is a professional state-wide organization serving the needs of those involved in tutoring post-secondary students.  This organization provides tutorial personnel a network for sharing and learning opportunities.  For more information, please visit http://www.michigan-tutors.org or contact Lorie Ermak, ermak@northwood.edu.
