Northwood University Florida Campus’ Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students recently earned a variety of awards and medals from this year’s Florida State competitions in Orlando, Florida, and now look forward to representing the University on the international level.

“I am always pleased to oversee Northwood University students as they compete at events such as this,” said Chair of the University’s Florida Aftermarket Department and DECA Advisor Bob Sundwick. “The students continually remind me that they are eloquently prepared to present themselves in both business competitions and social settings – qualities which will take them far when they’re ready to embrace the real world of business.”

The six competitors who placed in the Florida state competition and who will compete on the international level in Washington DC this April include:

  • Nick Cooper & Taron Beckford - 1st place in Financial Statement Analysis
  • Juan Guerrero - 1st place Hotel & Lodging
  • Zach Lieberman - 1st place in Retail Merchandising
  • Michelle Ray - 1st place in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing
  • Daniel Tellez - 2nd place Hotel & Lodging

Those students who earned medals include:

  • Taron Beckford
  • Nick Cooper
  • Giselle Dormeus
  • Juan Guerrero
  • Zach Lieberman
  • Philip Mawamba
  • Jevoane Prince
  • Michelle Ray
  • Daniel Tellez

"It was really great to see all of the students apply the knowledge they’ve obtained from the many classes Northwood University offers," smiled Daniel Tellez, a Northwood University senior who serves as DECA President. “It’s easy to see how these experiences puts them one step ahead of the competition when entering the professional world.”

With over a 60 year history, DECA has touched the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since it was founded in 1946. Clustered around the six academic areas of business management and administration, communications and technology, entrepreneurship, finance and accounting, hospitality and tourism and marketing and sales, DECA competitive events provide meaningful opportunities for Northwood University students to apply classroom knowledge toward scenarios they’ll encounter in the professional world of business.
